What is menopause?

As a woman ages:

  • Her reproductive years, ovary production, and menstruation stop
  • Her estrogen and progesterone hormone levels drop
  • She enters perimenopause

Perimenopause can last from one to several years and full menopause is reached when a woman’s period is absent for 12 months in a row. Perimenopause usually begins in women in their mid to late 40s, with full menopause typically coming on in the late 40s and early 50s.

What are the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause?

The symptoms of perimenopause and menopause are varied and no two cases are alike. For a lucky group of women, the effects of this transition are minimal and life goes on as it always has. For others, the transition can be more difficult, accompanied by symptoms that range from mild to severe, including:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Painful intercourse
  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats (loss of sleep)
  • Mood swings
  • Incontinence
  • Weight gain

The good news is that many of these symptoms can be successfully mitigated, minimizing the negative impact menopause can have on a woman’s life, allowing her the freedom to enjoy her post-reproductive years. Dr. Eden is equipped with the latest technology and expertise to help patients negotiate menopause with relative ease.

What are the treatments involved in menopause?

Since the onset of menopause can be accompanied by a host of different symptoms, treatments are wide and varied, but often include:

  • Hormone replacement therapy: Combination hormone replacement therapy (or HRT)  is a combination of estrogen and progesterone. HRT does have potential risks so this decision is best reviewed with your doctor.
  • Laser therapy: New technology, such as the MonaLisa Touch® laser system, has vastly improved quality of life issues in the areas of painful sex, vaginal dryness, and incontinence.
  • Lifestyle changes: More doctors are seeing the positive effects that certain lifestyle changes can have during menopause, like proper nutrition and exercise.

Whatever the treatment, Dr. Eden is a firm believer in improved quality of life and treats each woman individually and holistically for better overall wellness and wellbeing.
